welcome to soft air: a newsletter about making and paying attention

a new bi-weekly newsletter for connection and sharing my practice. shop updates, new patterns, class announcements and general studio news will continue to be shared here. issues will be archived on my site, in the journal.

in the studio: all hail our fancy queen

a david bowie inspired halloween costume for three year old U, who ended up being too sick to trick or treat and instead wore the outfit for her fancy dancy birthday (with red boots and all). a pink and shiny quilt with her name, just for her, inspired by her sassy glittery spirit. a mixture of remnant fabrics: the dark pink of the stars from a tshirt i tie-dyed while on a reservation in south dakota as i approached my 16th birthday. the gold and dark teal leftovers of her halloween costume. scraps of torn white sheets from the inn where her mom and i met. a thrifted stripey sheet as the back, all held together with plush fleece binding.

in the studio cont’d

alongside the mountain of fabric i have, there is an equally large mountain of unfinished projects. as i spent most of my free time in bed for several months, hand stitching was the way to go. I had this partially quilted piece made with a liberty of london scrap pack that needed finishing. I started this quilt probably close to 2 years ago now and between all my moves it stayed packed away for most of that time. sometimes you just need to finish the damn thing, and i'm very happy i did. finishing the quilt brought a sense of accomplishment to my sluggish days and it felt so satisfying to hang the quilt on the wall to photograph, seeing my design hold up and excite me all these years later.

i also had this tiny little needlepoint to finish- a mini quilt made with a scrap of canvas and a grab bag of different threads. cotton, silk, velvet, wool <3

in the soft air

Endless softest baby hangs and snuggles and sickness sickness sickness and repeat. Back in november i took a full time job at a daycare in an infant room- the last thing i would’ve picked as the best thing for me. My making practice has fallen a bit by the wayside as i’ve settled into my new schedule and dealt with truly months of endless sickness. Spring is here- it feels lighter, i feel more creative, and ready to lean into what this new season has to offer.
