in the studio

on my last trip to wilmington i had the pleasure of learning katazome with my friend kzstevens. kz recently learned the art of katazome, or rice resist dyeing, from her friend chinatsu of codo experiment while on a retreat with tatter blue library.

kz helped me to dye a plain white tshirt in her new henna indigo vat. after dipping the shirt once, she then showed me how to apply the rice paste via a cut stencil. kz made the rice paste herself and i helped her stir it to the right consistency. applying the rice paste was similar to silkscreening, the paste goes through an open area, leaving a positive image on the fabric. after the rice paste was dry we dipped the shirt again in the indigo vat. the shirt was then hung on the line for a bit to fully oxidize the indigo before we rinsed out the rice paste, revealing the resist pattern.

in the soft air

pink sneakers on the swings, the feeling of blue, the softnenss of half sleep, the goldenrod season turning and marking an almost fall, J's wrinkly baby hands, cozy U tucked in her car seat, writing postcards from new cities, corndogs for all, fresh cut pine, long phone chats on shop stoops, seeing old school friends get married via social media (everyone looks the same and we look so young in old photos. time is weird and short and long and flat.)
